This section of the site doesn't really relate to S&J Productions, but gives you a little insight into the stuff that's influenced me as a film-maker, and maybe as a human being!!!
In a continuing series of various randomness, I'm going to print various film related stuff here for fellow film lovers to have a read off and enjoy. My first topic is my top 100 films for 2009......
Simon's Essential Top 100 Films Of All Time - 2009
Every year, I sit and ponder over my favorite films. The ones that make me smile, that ones that make me cheer and the ones that make me cringe for all the right reasons. I've been doing it since 2004, and over the years 44 films have had the pleasure of being kicked off the list as it grows and changes with my age. This is the list for 2009, your not going to like all these films, but that's why it's my list. If you wanna do a list, I'd love to compare. But these are the films that have one me over and the ones i'd watch again and again........
100 - Dick Tracy (1990) The Childhood Favourite
This is a really personal and sentimental film to me because as a kid I loved it so much. I have seen it at least twenty times and have all the action figures. I can't imagine having a childhood without it.
99 - Brief Encounter (1945) The Essential David Lean
Forget Casablanca it's American overhyped rubbish, this is the real deal when it comes to proper british romance. No film comes as close to Romeo and Juliet's 'lovers who cant be together' stakes as this, this is partially down to David Lean's superb directing and also down to a touching script, and flawless acting. The film itself is a perfect time capsule of 1940's Britain.
98 - A Bande Apart (1964) The French New Wave One
The coolest film ever made. Period. Jean Luc Goddard leaves you feeling amazed even today with his original and unique camera work and editing. Not forgetting the brilliant jazz score.
97 - Commando (1985) The Pumped Up And Over The Top Eighties Action Movie
It's a terrible plot, some terrible dialogue, and some rubbish acting. If anyone else had starred in it, it would have been forgotten, but by securing Arnold Schwarzenegger as John Matrix they made a perfect piece of casting. Shame they screwed up then, when they cast Vernon Wells as Bennet the bad guy.
96 - The Wild Bunch (1969) The Anti-Western
How could it not be on the list? A group of men take on the Mexican army for no real reason and lose, was there every a better analogy for what was happening at the same time during the Vietnam war.
95 - King Kong (1931) The Definitive Monster Movie
It's amazing how well this film has stood the test of time, it looks just as good as it did seventy years ago. You can't help but cheer for Kong as he eats and kills humans.
94 - Violent Cop (1989) The Japanese Classic
Takeshi Kitano (or Beats Takeshi as he likes to be known) is one of the greatest actors/directors working in Japan. All his films are totally original, violent and well made. However this is the best of the bunch, his performance is hypnotic and tragic.
93 - Vertigo (1958) The Essential James Stewart Movie
Hitchcock suspense with Jimmy Stewart as the lead man = cinema gold. One of the few films worth watching from the 1950's (it was a crap decade for cinema) but essential viewing, checkout two masters at the top of there game.
92 - The Krays (1990) The Must See British Gangster Film
I don't know who I hero worship more, the real life Kray's or the Kemp brothers for pulling this off so well. A genuinely well made British film.
91 - Hard Boiled (1992) The John Woo Action Movie
Guns, Guns, Guns and flying doves. The body count is high and the bullet count is higher. The only Hong Kong action movie you need, and John Woo's best film by far.
90 - On The Waterfront (1954) The Classic Brando Film
It's been ripped off so many times, but this is the classic version of the story of a down and out trying to make something of his life. Stallone try's, but just cant match Brando in the acting stakes in Rocky.
89 - The Three Colours Trilogy (1990) The Artistic French One
Though these are three separate films they work together and can really only count as one. French cinema is some of the best in the world and these films prove it. A film enthusiast dream. The artistic quality of Blue and the subtle comedy of White make them individual classics, Red however is the equivalent of the Godfather part 3!
88 - Eraserhead (1977) The Essential David Lynch
You won't see a film more strange than this (unless maybe you watch Lynch's Inland Empire), truly unique and in a world and genre of it's own. It will take you places you've never gone before and leave you scratching your head asking what the hell was that all about? In a good way.
87 - The Ladykillers (1955) The Classic Vintage British Comedy
Alec Guinness was a genius when it came to acting, but his real talent was comedy. The Ladykillers is a brilliant story and represents a style of British comedy we seem to have lost in recent years.
86- Citizen Kane (1941) The Most Important Film Ever Made
The film that helped to shape cinema into what it is today, how could it not be on the list? Besides Orson Welles is a legend.
85 - Bad Taste (1987) The Low Budget Horror Film
Peter Jackson's first very low budget film of aliens invading earth involves so much originality in its use of gore that you have to admire it. It's also very funny.
84 - The Last Dragon (1985) The Guilty Pleasure
Ok, it's like one big long music video, but Berry Gordy's cheap martial arts film is an underrated classic that defines the word eighties. Every time Bruce Leroy takes on the Shogun of Harlem I can't help but cheer with delight!!
83 - Collateral (2004) The Tom Cruise Film
When it comes to Cruise movies its hard to pick one stand out one, most would pick Top Gun, but it's dated badly. For me Collateral is his personal best acting work, if not his best movie. He plays a bad guy so well, you have to wonder why he had never played one before.
82 - Midnight Express (1978) The Esentinal Prison Movie
Up there with Shawshank Redemption as one of the greatest prison movies of all time, only even more thrilling as it's based on a true story. Would be higher but it's got that dodgy homoerotic shower scene.
81 - Superbad (2007) The Essential Teen Movie
The only word you need to know about this is McLovin. Genius.
80 - Children Of Men (2006) The Modern British Sci-Fi Classic
Ever see a film with no expectations and then get blown away with how good it is? This did it for me. The camerawork is awesome, and the last twenty minutes is relentless. Feels like an early Kubrick film. Which is a very good thing.
79 - The Crow (1994) The Darkest Comic Book Movie Of Them All?
A fantastic comic book film that could have been a fantastic franchise had Brandon Lee not died. All the sequels are rubbish though.
78 - Donnie Darko (2002) The 21st Century Cult Classic
One of the most original films I've seen in a long time, would be higher but I'm sick of the hype and publicity it's received since I saw it at the cinema! Great movie though, and a definite cult classic.
77 - Battle Royale (2000) The Crazy Japanese One
It's a simple concept, but it will have you hooked every time, and each time you'll have a different favourite death scene!
76 - From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) The Vampire Movie
What happens when you cross Tarantino and Rodriguez? You get a cinematic assault on the senses! Part crime movie, part vampire movie, and easily George Clooney's best role!
75 - Psycho (1960) The Essential Hitchcock
To kill your main star in the middle of the film is such a brave move, proving that Hitchcock was the best director of his generation. Plus he was English, so take that America.
74 - Coming To America (1988) The Essential Eddie Murphy
Eddie Murphy makes so much shit these days its easy to forget how good he was, this film for me is him at his best….."Your royal Penis is clean your highness". Need I say more.
73 - Living in Oblivion (1995) The Little Known Comedy Classic
Low budget Steve Buscemi film about filmmaking. More people need to see this as it's one of the funniest films you'll ever see about working in the film industry.
72 - The Graduate (1967) The One With The Cool Soundtrack
Really funny and has some really creative camera work that would have been revolutionary in its day. The ending has been ripped off so much that it's hard to appreciate it anymore.
71 - Cinema Paradiso (1988) The Italian Drama
I have to admit when I watched it my expectations weren't high, but by the end I was holding back the tears. Anyone who loves cinema should watch this, its heart-warmingly Beautiful.
70 - Infernal Affairs (2002) The Hong Kong Masterpiece
The Departed was good, but it's the original that shines, great original concept and flawless acting from it's leads make it a must see slice of eastern cinema. It's also an hour and a bit shorter than The Departed.
69 - Seven (1997) The Essential Morgan Freeman
David Fincher's second best film is one which stands out more than most other films in the nineties, for all the wrong reasons. Some say Brad Pitt's the star but in truth we all know it's Morgan Freeman's film.
68 - No Country For Old Men (2007) The Essential Cohen Brothers
A modern day classic and a return to form for the Cohen's, when a film looks and taste this good, how could it not be on the list. Javier is a modern day acting god.
67 - Saving Private Ryan (1998) The Classic War Movie
As far as war films go this is my favourite, it simply looks great and is so well made by Spielberg that you fully believe it's the second world war. Best opening ever?
66 - The Shawshank Redemption (1994) The Modern Hollywood Classic
I use to think I was the only person that loved this film but now everybody does, still you don't need to be a genius to understand why. Really moving and fantastically acted, why doesn't Mr Mark Haines like it??
65 - The Truman Show (1998) The Must Have Jim Carrey
A really unique film that was made for Jim Carrey. Says a lot about today's obsession with reality TV. Proves that Jim doesn't have to hit himself in the face with a kipper to be funny, he CAN act.
64 - Stand By Me (1986) The Essential Stephen King
It just captures being a kid and growing up so well, it's set in the fifties but has a nice eighties feel to it. Stephen King has never written anything this simple and beautiful before or after it.
63 - The Thing (1982) The Essential Kurt Russel
Kurt Russel is the most underrated actor of his generation, and he is never better than in this. Still dark and scary the special effects just don't date.
62 - Planet Of The Apes (1967) The Essential Charlton Heston
Greatest science fiction film ever? Quite possibly. Concept is great and the ending is the best twist in cinema ever. Shame about all the sequels and the dreadful re-make.
61 - Airplane! (1980) The One With 251 Jokes!
The best slapstick of all time, the jokes are thick and fast and painfully funny. Leslie Nielsen was never better!
60 - The Dark Knight (2008) The Essential Superhero Movie
Batman Begins was brilliant. The Dark Knight is just outstanding. It's taken decades, but not finally we get everything we want from a superhero movie. Thankyou Christopher Nolan, please don't cock up the third one.
59 - Beetlejuice (1988) The Essential Tim Burton
Tim Burton's strangest and arguably best film s one you never get tired off watching if only for the great music. Why was there never a sequel? The possibilities are endless.
58 - Natural Born Killers (1995) The Road Movie
I took me years to get a copy of it and when I did channel 5 showed it a month later. Still it was worth the wait and stands as Oliver stones greatest film, even if it is immensely different from Tarantino's original script.
57 - The Third Man (1949) The Essential Orson Welles
So original funny and endlessly enjoyable. Orson Welles s only in the film for about twenty minutes but he steals it from leading man Joseph Cotton. Looks great as well, with a tremendous use of lighting and music.
56 - Shaun Of The Dead (2004) The Only Rom Zom Com You Will Ever Need
Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright are the best thing to happen to british cinema in years, this proves it. Hot Fuzz is great but this just tops it, probably because it has Zombies!
55 - One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest (1974) The Essential Jack Nicholson
Jack Nicholson's not the greatest actor in the world, but give him the right roll and you can't picture the film without him. A really well written film, in which you really care about the characters.
54 - Get Carter (1971) The Essential British Gangster Movie
Micheal Cain is the best British actor of the last forty years, this proves it. Without this we wouldn't have Lock Stock or the long good friday, this film brought gangster films upto date with gritty realism
53 - Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory (1971) The Only Musical You'll Ever Need
What can I say? I don't like musicals but I love this film to bits. The songs are great, it looks great, and it's really very dark. Gene Wilder plays it so well that how could you even imagine anyone else as Wonka. Take note Depp!
52 - Once Upon A Time In The West (1969) The Greatest Western Of Them All
As a rule I don't tend to care for Westerns that much but this just blew me away. Brilliantly made and easily the best performance from Charles Bronson I've ever seen. Great harmonica use as well.
51 - Man Bites Dog (1992) The Mocumentary
Probably the most disturbing film you'll ever see, but done with a very very dark sense of humor so that you just have to enjoy it. Made on such a low budget, but works to a great effect.
50- Hero (2002) The Martial Arts Epic
Film's don't come more beautiful than this. So brilliantly filmed, acted and choreographed that every filmmaker in the west should take note. Not only that but it uses strings to make actors fly, and not f**king CGI! Take note Hollywood.
49 - JAWS (1975) The Summer Blockbuster
Who hasn't thought about Jaws when you've been in the sea? It had such an impact in this sense that people forget how good a film it is, and how it started the whole attacking creatures film craze.
48 - Chasing Amy (1997) The Romantic Comedy
Kevin Smiths second mini-masterpiece is one of those true to life comedies that is as much comedy as it is drama. Proves that Ben Affleck can act if he tries.
47 - Desperado (1995) The Mexican Western
The action is so over the top in this film that you can't help but love ever minute of it. However the best part is Steve Buscemi sitting at the bar telling the story, this is sampled on the also great soundtrack.
46- Ghostbusters (1984) The Supernatural Eighties Favourite
Speaks for itself, if you don't like Ghostbusters then you don't deserve to live. A great fun film whether you're an adult or a child.
45 - Way Of The Dragon (1973) The Essential Bruce Lee Film
The only directed by and staring Bruce Lee film that proves what a legend he was. Worth watching just for the final showdown between him and Chuck Norris, oh and the double nun-chuck scene! Oh and the bit where he kicks a lightbulb out from the celling with his foot! Oh and that bit where........
44 - Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2004) The Crazy One That F**ks With Your Head
Fantastic script and flawless performances from Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet make this a modern cult classic. Each time you watch it you notice something new.
43 - Groundhog Day (1993) The Essential Bill Murry
Bill Murray is a comedy genius and this film was made for him, giving him the perfect platform to show of his dry and witty comedy.
42 - Annie Hall (1977) The Essential Woody Allen Film
Annie Hall is the ultimate brake up movie. Woody understands romance perfectly, and his script is touching and funny to show that. A RomCom for adults.
41 - Pans Labyrinth (2006) The Classic Spanish One
Completely unique and unlike anything else your likely to see, part fairy tale, part war story. Fully engrossing. Shockingly violent and beautifully shot.
40 - The Wrestler (2008) The Essential Wrestling Movie
Who would have guessed a film about wrestling could be so serious? Fantastic acting and brilliant direction, make this a modern independent classic. Why didn't Micky win the Oscar???
39 - Apocalypse Now (1978) The Essential Vietnam War Movie
Probably the best Vietnam movie of all time, simply because of the effort that went into making it. Brando's improvised performance at the end is just great as is the film's cool sixties sound track.
38 - Raging Bull (1980) The Essential Boxing Movie
Beautifully shot and flawlessly acted. Features boxing sequences that are better than Rocky! Far better.
37 - Sin City (2005) The Essential Robert Rodriguez
In time it may be a classic or date really badly, but at the moment it remains the best comic book movie of the last few years. An all-star cast and lots of violence, just make it a must have for all comic book fans.
36 - City Of God (2002) The REAL Gangster Movie
Brutal and gripping gangster film set in South America, with characters that you really love or hate. Who would have known that kids killing each other would be so much fun.
35 - The Goonies (1985) The Greatest Children's Film Of all Time
Is there anything else that comes close to it? It's just so brilliant, but you had to see it as a kid in the eighties to really appreciate it. Doesn't everyone want Sloth as a friend?!
34 - The Matrix (1999) The Modern Sci-Fi Classic
So original and groundbreaking, it's unfortunately now slightly tarnished but it's far less superior sequels.
33 - The King Of Comedy (1982) The Best Robert De Niro Comedy Ever!
Scorsese and De Niro's fantastic forgotten comedy that earned a place on this list the day I saw it. Go find it and watch it. De Niro is so funny it might give him the edge over Pacino in the best actor stakes.
32 - Kill Bill Vol 1&2 (2003/2004) The Martial Arts/Western Tarantino Homage
They really are one film so I'll count them as one, besides one cant work without the other. Totally self indulgent on Tarantino's behalf but completely enjoyable all the same. Would be on this list for the 'house of blue leaves' fight alone!
31 - Indiana Jones And The Raiders Of The Lost Ark (1981) The Essential Harrison Ford Movie
All the Indiana Jones films are great and this is no exception. The only thing that puts it below Temple Of Doom, it's sequel, is that it doesn't have a 'Shortround' co staring.
30 - Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) The Ultimate Adventure Movie
It's arguably not the best film, but it's my personal favourite because I've seen it the most times and saw it first out of the three. Holds its place on the list as well because it's the darkest of the four films.
29 - Scarface (1983) The Over The Top Eighties Gangster Movie
Though dated now it still remains the definitive eighties gangster movie. It's amazing how brilliantly overplayed Al Pacino plays Tony Montana in his parody of the gangster, showing how shallow and pointless the life style really is once you're at the top. After all you can only go down once your there.
28 - Taxi Driver (1976) The Essential Robert De Niro
Gritty. Dark. Controversial. Made almost thirty years ago. Well ahead of its time and giving the world the best anti-hero in cinema, De Niro's Travis Bickle. Would you want to talk to him?
27 - Clerks (1995) & Clerks 2 (2006) The Essential Kevin Smith
The first and funniest film from Kevin Smith was shot at nights in a convenience store in black and white on no budget. But it doesn't matter because the script is so good it could have been shot in a shed and still made this list. The sequel continues the brilliance so I added it here as a companion piece. Cheap I know.
26 - A Clockwork Orange (1971) The Essential Stanley Kubrick
So misunderstood, its not the violent sex filled sci-fi so many make out but rather a very funny black comedy. Malcolm McDowell is great as the now cult figure of Alex, you really feel for him when he gets screwed over by the system.
25 - Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991) The Special Effects Blockbuster Spectacular
Probably the last great sci-fi action movie, not as dark as Terminator, but with lots of action and special effects its hard not to like it. The thumb up in the lava at the end brings a tear to the eye.
24 - Die Hard (1988) The Definitive 'Everyman' Action Movie
Ok it doesn't exactly have the cinematic brilliance or fantastic story of other films but for an eighties action film it can't be beaten. This is the film that proved Bruce had what it takes to be an action star. Yippe Ki Yay Mother..........
23 - Leon (1995) The Hitman Movie
Luc Besson's work is always good, but Leon is simply his best, out shinning even La Femme Nikita. It's not the action that makes the film fantastic or even Gary Oldman, but simply the relationship between Leon and Matilda.
22 - The Big Lebowski (1997) The Surreal Comedy
The Cohen brothers are an expert when it comes to characterization and The Dude has to be there coolest character to date. The story is as stupid as it is brilliant, but all that aside it's just a genuinely funny film
21 - Back To The Future II (1989) The Complicated Sci-Fi Movie
It takes the originals plot and adds another whole level to it, making it more complicated. So in fairness you don't need to see the original because this shows the events at the same time, as displaying those in the future! The perfect sequel, you wonder why they didn't make more than three films.
20 - Back To The Future (1985) The Only Film Featuring A Delorian
There was never better casting than Micheal J Fox and Christopher Llyod. There perfect, the film's perfect and the eighties and the fifties never looked so good.
19 - True Romance (1992) The Greatest Film Tarantino Never Made
This film can't fail. Directed by Tony Scott, Written by Tarantino and staring every cool actor of the nineties. Endlessly enjoyable and watchable.
18 - Monty Pythons Life Of Brian (1979) The Blasphemous One
Comedy at its absolute best. It doesn't get better than this because it is so well done and gives religion a much needed kick up the ass. The jokes are thick and fast and the characters as crazy and funny as always.
17 - OldBoy (2004) The Extreme Korean One
The best Korean film of all time is simply not enough to describe this film, it's also one of the most brutal. Where else can you see someone having there teeth pulled out with a hammer and eat a live squid? Cool.
16 - Fight Club (1999) The Movie Of Our Generation
Great twist, better film. Edward Norton is the true star of the film and not Brad Pitt, proving that he can do any role on the screen from nazi to schizophrenic!!
15 - The Blues Brothers (1980) The Car Chase Movie With Added Nazi's
It has everything Car Chases, Cool Music, Comedy, Action, Nazis, Romance, and loads of cameos. What more do you want? John and Dan were made to play the blues brothers and they should never have attempted to redo it without John Belushi when they made Blues Brothers 2000. Which was rubbish.
14 - Aliens (1986) The One With Aliens Versus Marines In Space!
Aliens VS Marines in space, it doesn't get better than that. Well actually when Ripley gets in the big yellow cargo loader and fights the alien queen it kinda does……
13 - Predator (1987) The Most Kick Ass Arnie 80's Sci-Fi Of Them All
As a male child born in the eighties only one man could be my hero, Arnie. Other than playing the Terminator this remains armies best role, yes even better than John Matrix in Commando.
12 - The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy (2001-2003) The Fantasy Epic To End Them All
Lord of the Rings has dominated cinema for the last few years and quite rightly so, as the films show some of the best stuff cinema has seen for years. Not just the special effects either but simply Peter Jackson's great camera work and use of a beautiful landscape. My favourite of the three is Fellowship of the rings, because it's the only time you get to see the whole fellowship together. In the other two the journey to mordor is only one of several stories happening at the same time, while in this film it is central to all the characters, uniting them. The films are this high because you can watch them over and over again and still spot something new. This is the key to a classic film.
11 - Withnail And I (1987) The Greatest British Comdey Of All Time
So British, it's Brilliant. The comedy is so subtle and dry it's a film that no American could ever understand. Proves with no budget you can still make a truly great period British comedy. This has influenced my writing and characterisation with my own comedy shorts, more than perhaps any other film on this list. A one of a kind unique masterpiece.
10 - Star Wars Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi (1983) The Final Part Of The Great Saga
This probably would have been my favorite as a kid for the opening Jabba's palace stuff alone, but as you keep watching the films you realise that it just doesn't have the same impact as the other two. Probably because it ends on a high note, i.e dancing Ewoks!
09 - The Evil Dead II - Dead By Dawn (1987) The Best Horror Film Ever! No Argument!
I just can't get bored of this film no matter how many times I watch it. It is just so well made and is the perfect mix of comedy and horror. Bruce Campbell is the god of the B movie stars. This film made me want to be a director.
08 - The Terminator (1984) The Essential Arnold Schwarzenegger
The 3erd Cameron film on the list and defiantly Arnold's best film to date. Why it's so high on the list over T2 is that it's so much darker and tense, relying on shocks and stunts rather than special FX for effect. Also it captures the mid eighties really well!
07 - Reservoir Dogs (1991) The Only Heist Gone Wrong Movie You'll Ever Need To See
The dialogue is so good in dogs that you can't help but love it from the opening. The cast as well is so perfectly put together, they play off each other beautifully creating characters you love. However never let anyone tell you Mr. Blonde is the coolest, it has to be Mr. Pink.
06 - Goodfellas (1990) The Essential Martin Scorsese Gangster Movie
The second best period gangster movie. Any male who watches this and doesn't want to be a gangster is simply gay. The only choice you have to make is who's your favourite in it, Pesci, De Niro or Ray Liota?
05 - Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977) The One That Launched Modern Cinema
I love Star Wars so naturally there high up the list, but even as a non fan, how could you not be drawn in by the set up of New Hope. The opening image of the spaceship, the introduction of Darth Vader, the Cantina Scene, the first shot of a lightsaber, the shock death of Obi Wan (even more brutal now that all six films are complete), watching the death star get blown up, I could go on and on.
04 - Pulp Fiction (1994) The Essential Tarantino
How could it be better than Reservoir Dogs? Simple. Take a brilliant script, a good cast and lots of violence and add drugs, a complex narrative structure and gay rape. Bingo! I like this and Dogs just as much but what gives it the edge is that it's just that little bit smoother and smarter.
03 - The Godfather Part II (1974) The Best Sequel Of All Time
Everybody raves on about how it's better than the Godfather, and in a lot of ways there right. However it doesn't work unless you've seen the original so there for in theory how can it be better than the film that sets this film up. Would you care about Michael if you hadn't seen the first one? It perfectly continues the story without once losing your interest but it can never be a stand-alone film.
02 - The Godfather (1972) The Essential Gangster Movie
If you're male this film was made for you. It's just so good that you could spend your life watching it and still not decide with brother you would want to be. Al Pacino was never better but here he is topped in performance by Brando, who really is the Godfather of Godfathers. And I haven't even talked about how good Francis Ford Coppola's direction is……
01 - Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980) The Greatest Independent Film
My favorite film of all time is Episode 'V' of the Star Wars saga. It is the best one because it ends on such a downer (not to quote Clerks) Vader is Luke's father, Han is frozen in carbonate, C-3PO in pieces, Luke loses a hand. Not only that, were introduced to Lando, Yoda, Bobba Fett and the Emperor. It takes a great idea and takes it that extra bit further. Shows us more of the galaxy and leaves us wanting more.
Need I say more?

Simon's Guide To Extreme Cinema
Below is a list of some of the most depraved and extreme films i've ever seen, and I thought i'd be nice enough to share them with you, in-case you ever fancied a night sitting in watching people being eaten alive by zombies etc. So have a read and click on the IMDB links for each one to find out a little more about them, but be warned, if you thought Hostel or Saw was disturbing, then your in for a shock. I've dug the depths of hell to fins the most crazy and mental films I could, and then I dug a little deeper. Enjoy the list.........
1. Ichi The Killer (2001)
The Japanese cult classic that still doesn't fail to shock. As extreme as Japanese cinema gets, there isn't a single moment when you aren't left speechless.
Extreme Rating 8/10
2. Irreversible (2002)
There's only two words you need to know for this film 'Fire Extinguisher'. The image will haunt you for the rest of you life.
Extreme Rating 9/10
3. Last House On The Left (1972)
Pretty tame by today's standards and a pretty poor film.
Extreme Rating 3/10
4. Visitor Q (2001)
Incest. Necrophilia. Rape. Murder. Lactating. Drugs. Child Abuse. Family Unity? They don't come stranger than this, but it's strangely rewarding.
Extreme Rating 7/10
5. Sweet Movie (1974)
Just wrong on so many levels, sweet movie is the borderline between art and depravity. If the child abuse (with real child actors) doesn't push you over the edge, then the urination scenes will!
Extreme Rating 8/10
6. Guinea Pig Experiment / Guinea Pig 2 - Flowers Of Flesh (1985)
The first two parts of an ongoing franchise, there both basically just about a woman who gets kidnapped and then mutilated/tortured/cut up for the rest of the films short running time. Not exactly out to win any awards then......
Extreme Rating 8/10
7. Bad Boy Bubby (1993)
A genuine lost classic, and easily the most enjoyable of all these films....if you can just get past the incest and murder at the start that is......
Extreme Rating 2/10
8. Bad Taste (1987)
Low budget gore galore flick from Peter Jackson, that is both blood splattering and funny.
Extreme Rating 5/10
9. Society (1989)
Pretty standard eighties horror film, that will have your jaw hitting the floor when it gets to the final act. You have never seen anything like this, even in your most messed up nightmares, you could not envision the stuff that happens.....
Extreme Rating 6/10
10. Story Of Ricky (1991)
Mental Japanese prison drama, that feels like a live action cartoon. Ever wanted to see someone strangle someone else with there own intestines? Look no further....
Extreme Rating 7/10
11. Island Of Death (1975)
Very poor b-movie from the seventies. Nothing you haven't seen before except maybe goat rape........and some horrendously bad acting.
Extreme Rating 5/10
12. Ebola Syndrome (1996)
Fun for everyone, as a man contracts a virus and then decides to give it too everyone. He also does a dirty deed into some meat and gives it to some customers in a restaurant. Nice.
Extreme Rating 6/10
13. BrainDead (1992)
Peter Jackson, delivers one of the most fun and sick zombie movies of all time. My blood and guts than any other film your likely to see.
Extreme Rating 5/10
14. I Spit On Your Grave (1978)
Women gets raped and takes revenge on the gang of men who raped her. Pointless and boring, clearly a product of it's time.
Extreme Rating 2/10
15. Ilsa, Harem Keeper Of The Oil Sheiks (1976)
Follow up to Ilsa, She Wolf Of The SS, this exploitation classic contains death by sex machine (that implants dynamite deep inside the unsuspecting lady!!!!!).
Extreme Rating 2/10
16. Gozu (2003)
The film is weird and complicated, but the ending takes things to a whole new level of weirdness. You'll be lost for words and freaked out for a week.
Extreme Rating 6/10
17. Aftermath (1994)
Really well made short film (30 mins) that pushes the boundaries about as far as they can go. Not a single word is spoken in the whole film either, so that's even more impressive. Not for those with a weak stomach.
Extreme Rating 8/10
18. Audition (1999)
Miike again, this man is responsible for most of the crazy shit to come from Japan. This is entry level Miike, only the last half will freak you out, as oppose to the whole running time of some of his other films.
Extreme Rating 5/10
19. Taxidermia (2006)
More bizarre than extreme, but leaves a nasty taste all the same. It's unsettling from the offset when you see a guy shoot fire from his penis!
Extreme Rating 3/10
20. The Exterminator (1980)
Apart from the opening decapitation and the meat grinder scene, it's no longer that extreme. In fact it's not only not extreme, it's also a pretty shit movie.
Extreme Rating 2/10
21. Oldboy (2003)
Simply a great film on any list, but I guess a little too much to handle for some people. It's either the octopuss scene or the teeth scene that usually make people squirm.
4/10
22. The Devils (1971)
Religion and corruption, with nun rape and over the top performances make this still unavailable on dvd.
5/10
23. El Topo (1970)
Strange, surreal and truly unique sort of western that will leave you with some of the weirdest images in your head you've ever seen.
2/10
24. Kids (1995)
Underage sex, rape and sexually transmitted disease. Oh the joys of being a teenager.
2/10
25. Funny Games (1997)
Don't bother with the remake, Micheal Haneke's original is a brutal unforgiving exploration of screen violence that questions the viewers enjoyment of violence within cinema. This film will screw with you on all levels.
5/10
26. Switchblade Romance (2003)
Bloody, brutal and relentless, would be a classic if it wasn't let down by a pointless cop-out ending.
4/10
27. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
Speaks for itself really. Though it's not about the gore or violence with this film, it's the nerve racking tension that makes it hard to watch.
2/10
28. Gummo (1997)
Not really extreme, rather weird for the sake of being weird. Avoid, unless you like spending time with rednecks.
1/10
29. Three Extremes (2004)
Three of the best Asian directors get together and produce a triple story cine-fest of the extreme. 'Cut' the second story is the best, while Miike's third story will just freak you out.
5/10
30. Secret Things (2002)
Two women go to extreme lengths to manipulate men for there money, cue all sorts of depraved sexual endeavors and one weird ending.
3/10
31. The Wicker Man (1973)
A British Classic, that will crawl under your skin and make you never want to visit any isles in Scotland.
2/10
32. ILSA, SHE WOLF OF THE SS (1975)
The first of the Ilsa classics, and probably the most brutal, watch in shock as Ilsa tortures various women in a variety of ways, to test her theory - can women tolerate more pain than men?!
6/10
Total insanity! It's not horribly gory or violent, it's just strange and a little bizarre. You will spend a week trying to figure out what the ending was all about, but there's probably no real answer.
3/10
She has a machine gun/chainsaw for an arm, and is quite possibly the coolest female anti-hero of all time. Watch in amazment as she slices and dices her way through a variety of bad guys!!
5/10
David Lynch at his very best. The weirdest film your ever likely to see, and the baby in it will freak you out for the rest of your life. Truly strange but brilliant.
4/10
Spanish shock cinema in which a nazi pedophile tries to kill himself but fails, ending up in a sort of glass incubator to keep him alive. He is looked after/taken advantage of by one of his former victims who wants to be just like him. Creepy, twisted and a little unsettling. If child abuse/murder and a thumping eighties soundtrack is your bag, check it out!!
7/10
37. Baat sin faan dim ji yan yuk cha siu baau (The Untold Story) 1993
A possible contender for sickest film on this list, this category 3 chinease oddity follows a psychotic mass murderer as he kills various people in a variety of ways (chopsticks anyone?) over the smallest thing. However it's when the police catch him, and we get a flashback of what he did to his own brother and his family, that this film really takes things to a whole new level. Truly disturbing, and unimaginable from any other part of the world, the final scenes will leave you a little speechless......
8/10
38. The New York Ripper (1982)
Gritty serial killer yarn set in New York city (obviously), that features a couple of nasty deaths including a nasty close up of a razor blood cutting through a woman's body! But really makes it weird, is that the serial killer when on the phone, speaks like Donald Duck. Seriously.
5/10
A parasite type thing enters women resulting in them having a killer pus......does this really need a synopsis. Just watch it.
4/10
40. Seul Contre Tous aka I Stand Alone (1998)
For anyone who's ever wanted to see a pregnant women being punched in the stomach! Not nice in the slightest, and not a great film either really. 3/10
More Hong Kong craziness. Entry level though, just a nasty death by power tools to freak you out.
3/10
You really need to think long and hard before you watch this one. If rotting corpse sex is not you cup of tea.....DO NOT WATCH. If it is your cup of tea, then you've got serious problems.
9/10
43. Dans Ma Peau (In My Skin) (2002)
Slightly boring french drama in which a woman falls over at a party and cuts her leg. She likes the feeling of cutting her leg so much she starts to do it more often, and then eventually starts eating her cut off skin aswell!! Don't watch over dinner........
3/10
A really gritty and realistic portrayal of a woman abused and held killer by a serial killer.......that's what it wants to be, but in reality it's just a piece of exploitation rubbish that's barely watchable and badly acted. Avoid.
4/10
45. Necromantik 2 (1991)
Just as crazy as Necromantik one, but a little longer and slower in pace. The ending is spot on though, perhaps even topping the insanity of Necromantik!! Watch them both and decide for yourself.......I dare you.
8/10
46. Schramm (1993)
From the director of Necromantik 1 & 2 comes something even more messed up. This really will kepp you guessing as the plot unfolds in many directions you didn't think it would go. Warped, gory, twisted and truly unique.
9/10
